Woodwind Instruments
(clarinet, oboe, English horn etc.)
Experience In The Music Field:
"I Play oboe and english horn in several ensembles including the Southern Tier
Symphony Orchestra and the American Legion Band of the Tonawanda's.
Conducting/Directing experience includes bands, choirs, jazz ensembles,
marching bands, and musicals. Teaching experience (non-conducting) includes
piano/keyboard classes, general music classes and music theory classes. I
also have been a private music teacher for over 20 years."
Live Performances:
"I performed with different ensembles around the country. My favorite venues
include Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House. Local performances
include Kleinhan's Music Hall, the Riviera Theatre and several local schools,
churches, parks and concert halls."
Favorite Instrument:
"It may be a tie between the piano and oboe. I consider the piano to be a
complete instrument capable of playing many parts. All musicians should have
experience playing the piano. The oboe is challenging with a dramatic sound
that can be bright and playful or serious and somber."
Why She Enjoys Teaching Music:
"Music gives people an outlet; music is emotional and expressive. These are
qualities you don't always find when teaching other types of classes. I've seen
shy students for example suddenly become "alive" when playing an instrument.
Some students have trouble expressing themselves verbally but they are able
to express themselves musically."
Why Music Is A Passion:
"Music has been a part of my life since I was born. I can't imagine being
without it. My family is musical and has been a big influence on me, especially
my mother who still plays piano. I've been playing songs on the piano since I
was two and begged my mother to take piano lessons. Eventually I became
interested in learning other instruments and went to college and graduate
school to become a music educator."
Musical Inspiration:
"I have been inspired by many different artists and genres. Early influences
include Bach and Rachmaninov. Eventually I became interested in classic rock
and jazz. My favorite rock band is Genesis, but early Genesis when Peter
Gabriel was in the group. Firth of Fifth is one of my favorite Genesis songs. I
would listen to it for hours so that I could learn the intricate piano part by ear"
Any Other Interesting Facts:
"I was a performance major and music education major at Baldwin-Wallace
College. I enjoyed playing oboe, english horn and oboe d'amore for their annual
Bach Festival which included professional musicians;some of whom played for
the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra. I also went to SUNY College at Fredonia
and received my master's degree at SUNY at Buffalo. I received several music
awards including most talented musician, williamsville music boosters
scholarship and college scholarships. I also enjoy horseback riding, bicycling,
kayaking and hiking."
